About this Recipe

Tofu can be an absolutely delicious protein source. But when not cooked right, I can understand why some people don’t like it. I remember when I was young, it was still very new and my mom tried different ways to cook it for us. I thought it was absolutely horrible. Poor mom!

I know I’m not the only one who had bad experiences like that. Badly cooked tofu is not something you want to eat! But if you think about it, if you eat a pork chop with no seasoning at all, don’t tell me it’s going to be amazing. Well, the same goes for tofu. The only difference is that usually people know how to cook meat, but not plant-based proteins. So, let me show you in this post the quickest, yet most delicious, way of cooking tofu.

Simple tips and tricks

    • Express mode: This recipe is going to be the quickest way of cooking tofu you will probably have ever seen. This is our go-to tofu on busy weeknights, but it’s NO sad meal, trust me. All you need is a big pan.

    • 2 simple ingredients: Yep, that’s all you’re going to add to your tofu. You need soy sauce and maple syrup. That’s it. I recommend you stick to maple syrup for a better result. That being said, you can definitely swap the soy sauce for tamari for a gluten-free option.

    •  No marinade: It is very common to marinate tofu for a few hours before cooking it, and it can give great results, but this recipe requires no marinating time at all! You will simply add your 2 ingredients at the end of the cooking process, and one minute after, you’re ready to eat.

    • High heat: For this recipe, we want to cook the tofu on high heat pretty much the whole time. Don’t be afraid, if you watch the tofu carefully, it will not burn. Instead, you will get a beautifully crispy and golden result. I recommend using avocado oil or canola oil, or any oil that has a high smoke point. They are better for cooking at high temperatures.

    • Cutting the tofu: You can cut the tofu the way you want it, depending on the meal you’re cooking. I like cooking it in slices, but if I use it for pasta, for example, I will make very small chunks. It all depends on what you’re making.

    Versatility

There are so many ways to use this tofu! Here are a few examples of what you could add it to:

    • Stir fry
    • Sautés
    • Fried Rice
    • Pad Thaï
    • Sandwiches
    • Pasta
    • Poke bowl
    • Buddha Bowls
    • …and the list goes on!

Of course, you can also eat it on its own, the same way you would eat a steak, for example. (Adding a nice gravy to it is a delicious option!) For this post, we made an incredible sandwich (have a look above…) with barbecue sauce, fresh tomatoes, lettuce, and my pickled onions… It was mind-blowing!

NOTE: You can use the exact same recipe for tempeh!

The Quickest & Most Addictive Tofu Recipe

    Yield: 4 portions
    Prep Time: 5 minutes
    Cook Time: 10 minutes
    Total Time: 15 minutes

This is the quickest yet most addictive tofu recipe!

    Ingredients

    • 1 bloc of tofu (454g)
    • 2 tbsp soy sauce (or tamari for a gluten free option)
    • 1 tsp maple syrup
    • 2 tbsp oil

    Instructions

    1. Cut your tofu the way you want it (slices, chunks, etc.).
    2. In a small bowl, mix the soy sauce and the maple syrup.
    3. On a large pan over high heat, heat up 2 tbsp of oil. Fry the tofu on one side for 3-4 minutes, watching it carefully and making sure it doesn't burn. When it starts to turn golden brown and crispy, flip it and cook the other side for a few more minutes until it's also crispy and nicely colored.
    4. When your tofu is cooked, add the soy sauce and maple syrup to the pan. Give the pan a good shake and flip the tofu pieces to make sure all sides are coated in the sauce. Cook for an extra minute or two.
    5. Your tofu is ready to be served the way you want it!

    Notes

Use tamari sauce for a gluten-free version!
